Week 9-10 Models

I created my final 2 models this week. My first was a model of a tennis court (1:100 scale). I chose this scale as a tennis court is relatively large in real life with a length of over 10m and this scale was the easiest to work with. My ideal living space, externally speaking would have a tennis court, reflecting my interest and love of this sport. I spent a while trying to figure out how I would create the net and attempted to weave one myself, however, at this smaller scale, it was too difficult. I ended up wrapping cotton thread around a piece of cardboard in order to resemble this feature. The bordering trees were created from foam that I painted with watercolors. I then used matchsticks as the trunks and tracing paper for this leaves/foliage. I also added a hilly landscape as the background as this would be my ideal landscape for my living space.

My second model this week was a final iteration of my ideal living space (1:50). I included a folded roof which is more practical in terms of water drainage compared to my week 8 model. The interior design is similar to my week 7 model, however, I incorporated the windows I included in my week 8  model as I liked the way the light shone through it. I tried to create a glass-like texture for the half walls on the mezzanine level, however, I'm not sure the method I used expresses this well. The mezzanine level would be used as a study space as my current room/house does not have a designated study space. This would be helpful when working from home. The lower level is intended for a sleeping and living situation, with a model of a bed and a sofa expressing this. If I was to design this again, I would probably make the roof angled to create some aesthetic interest when looking at the model from the outside.

Week 8 - New Model

I created another model this week using a 1:50 scale. I enjoyed completing the paper folding techniques in earlier weeks, so I used another technique to create the roof of the model. I focused more on the exterior of the building this week rather than the interior, taking inspiration from the iterative model I made in week 7 in terms of using a folding technique for the roof. I used balsa wood for the majority of the house, with a paper roof and tracing paper used for the back windows. I created four slim, vertical windows on one side of the house, with each window only opening from one side (top or bottom). I thought this would create an interesting lighting effect, and would also be something a little different as opposed to a regular window. I'm quite proud of the pool I created as it is made up of a few layers of materials (boxboard, sandpaper, tracing paper, plastic, and paper) which creates depth and a more realistic effect.

For my next model, I will try to create more levels to this 'house', as realistically, it is only the size of one room and is more of a pool house.

Week 8 - Render of Initials

A 'fabric (grey)' texture was used on the inside to reflect my interests in sewing. A 'jade (white)' material was also used on the inside. The outside is comprised of glass materials (grey and clear) as well as a mirror finish which is reflecting a 'lake' background, as I prefer this to other sceneries such as that of the city or the desert etc.

Week 8 - Studio Activities

I used two of the models I made in week 7 to use in this photoshop task.

I used a wooden floorboard texture as well as a plastered wall texture to use in this image. I also photoshopped in laptop to replace the paper one I had made, in order for this to look more realistic. It was difficult to photoshop a realistic background (nature) for this image as this model is a singular room and not a model of a complete house. This is why I used the textures that I did for this background.

I used carpet and plaster textures to mimic that of my actual room space. I also photoshopped a tree into the window as that is the view that is seen in real life. I got rid of some of the cardboard textures that could be seen on the edges of the desk to make the image more realistic.

I used a concrete wall texture for the outside of my model and also photoshopped a sky, grass and some trees and hedges into the background. I found it a little difficult to get the perspective right for the tree and hedge on the side of the building, but in the end, I don't think it looks too bad.

Week 7 - Studio Activities

Photos of Room Space and Final/Updated Room Model (1:20)

I used cardboard for this model and colored paper to make the model more appealing. I used plaster filler to fill the gaps of the cardboard in order for it to look more like a sectional model. My room is quite small and there isn't a lot of free space; as the modeled objects convey. I'm quite happy with this model as it is to scale and sturdy.

Updated Iterative Model with Scale Figures (1:20). I made this model out of paper, so it isn't as sturdy as the model of my room. I created a mezzanine space in order to separate my study space and living/sleeping space, as these coexist in my current situation. I like the indoor garden I created as well as the roof that has sections cut out to let light in.
